Debuted as a child actor in 1920, at age 4.

Appeared in films for Koyo Studios, Makino Film Productions, and Kawai Productions. He became a free agent in 1939, before joining Toho in 1941.

After the war, Matsuo transitioned into supporting roles.

One of his last roles was a cameo in Fukuda Jun's The Secret of the Telegian (1960). After that he became a free agent again.
