Born in Vancouver, Canada, Nakamura moved to Japan in 1940. His fluency in English and "tough guy" features made him a natural fit for roles as gangsters, foreigners, and international villains. He often appeared in international co-productions and was frequently cast as Chinese or Western characters in Japanese films.
In the kaijû genre, he is known for playing the villainous henchman to Nelson in Mothra (1961) and the kidnapped Dr. Okada in Latitude Zero (1969), where he delivered his lines in English. He also played a newspaper executive in The Human Vapor (1960). In 1967, he served as the Master of Ceremonies for the Peter, Paul and Mary tour in Japan.
