Nakayama was a contract actor for Toho from 1954 until the studio system's dissolution in the early 1970s. He was a frequent supporting player in the kaijû genre, appearing in films such as Mothra (1961), Gorath (1962), and Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965). He is perhaps best remembered by fans for his role in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) as the tourist who loses his hat into the crater of Mt. Aso just before Rodan emerges.
