Oda was a highly efficient director at Toho, known for his ability to churn out films on schedule. His reliability earned him the nickname "Odabutsu-san" from his crew. He started his career as an assistant director under Yamamoto Kajiro, training alongside Kurosawa Akira and Honda Ishiro.
While he directed over 50 films in various genres, Oda is most famous among genre fans for helming two significant entries in Toho's tokusatsu canon: Invisible Man (1954) and Godzilla Raids Again (1955). The latter, a direct sequel to the original Godzilla, established the "monster vs. monster" formula that would define the franchise. Oda retired from film directing in 1958 to work in television.
