Tani Akira
Bio
Tani Akira was a stout character actor known for his expressive physicality, and he specialized in portraying uncultured, rough-hewn roles such as yakuza gangsters, ronin, or peasants.
Tani began his career as a theater director, joining Toho in 1934. He remained behind the scenes for several years before making his first cinematic appearance as an actor in 1940. He worked steadily through the war and post-war years, but his breakthrough occurred in 1954 when he delivered a comedic supporting turn as a bandit scout in Kurosawa Akira's epic Seven Samurai. Kurosawa repeatedly cast the actor in subsequent samurai films, utilizing him in Throne of Blood (1957), The Hidden Fortress (1958), and Yojimbo (1961).
In the realm of Toho's science-fiction and tokusatsu films, Tani is best known as the crabby Chief Fisherman who "sells" Mothra's egg in Honda Ishirô's Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964).
In 1966, Tani was found dead from an apparent suicide. The onset of a chronic disease and personal debt were attributed as factors in his passing. Over his career, he managed to appear in well over one hundred films.
