Katô Shigeo
Bio
Born in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Katô Shigeo was a prolific character actor who joined Toho in the early 1950s, making his screen debut in Kurosawa Akira's Ikiru (1952).
His unassuming "everyman" appearance made him a favorite for roles as villagers, farmers, policemen, and laborers. He was often referred to as a "location man" for his ability to blend naturally into any scene. He appeared in numerous classics, including Seven Samurai (1954) and the original Godzilla (1954), and hundreds more, often uncredited.
Following the collapse of the studio contract system in 1972, Katô effectively retired from full-time acting and became a professional fisherman in his hometown of Kamakura. However, he maintained a relationship with the industry, making cameo appearances in later Godzilla films like The Return of Godzilla (1984) and Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000).
He returned to the screen one last time in the independent film Our Memories on the Beach (2019) before passing away in 2020 at the age of 94.
