Nakamura was a founding member of the Bungakuza theater company in 1937, establishing himself as a prominent figure in modern Japanese theater. He later left the company alongside Mishima Yukio to form the NLT and Roman Theater troupes. On stage, he famously performed in Ionesco's The Lesson for eleven years.
In film, Nakamura's intellectual demeanor led to him being frequently cast as scientists, doctors, and government officials. Toho sci-fi fans recognize him as Dr. Munakata in Dogora (1964) and Dr. Kida in The War of the Gargantuas (1966). He also appeared in numerous films by Kurosawa Akira, including I Live in Fear (1955) and Throne of Blood (1957).
